Volunteering Programs

While learning spanish you can request to be placed as a vounteer in several different programs where you will be able to develop practical confidence and gain much more form your visit by helping others.

1. Grupo de Estudios Sobre la Mujer "Rosario Castellanos" A.C.
What is?
A Group of woman that since 1977 have worked to reach gender equality and respect for diversity. Their mission is to transform society for it to be just and equal and where all woman rights are respected.

What can I do? Psychological counseling for problems that woman confront at home, work or in society in general. Legal couseling for maritage or family dispute issues. Ecological Orientation covering basic aspects on how to protect your environment.
Sexual and reproductive health
and training with themes related to gender issues and the impact on womans health.Comunication, offering help to create, show, videos, documentaries or movies in order to build sesibility, tolerance in within the society about the current situation woman live in.

2. Patronato Pro Casa
What is? Orphanage that provides shelter to homeless and mistreated children between the ages of 5 and 16. Pro Casa helps them with food, lodging, schooling, clothing to these youngsters. Activities for the children include psychologist sessions in the mornings and school in the after noon (2pm to 6pm) , Volunteering times:

11am to 12:30pm
6pm to 9:30pm
5 Hours per day.

What can I do? Art classes from 11am to 12:30pm. Mon and Wed.
Physical Education classes also from 11am to 12:30pm. Tue, Thu and Fri)
You can also help children with homework, organize games and activities and help or even help out with to cook them meals.

3. CANICA or Centro de Apoyo al Niño de la Calle de Oaxaca
What is?
Nonprofit civil organization that has been working for 11 years to support youth and families that work and or live in the streets of the city of Oaxaca, Mexico. They promote the integral development of Oaxaca’s street children, and its victims of domestic violence through a professional program of educational and social services that help them and their families actively and positively transform their personal, living, and social conditions. What can I do to help?
Everything.

4. Milpas de Oaxaca
What is? An NGO that helps rural and indigenous youth by offering educational and recreational activities, they also encourage more interaction between youth and adults in their own communities.

What can I do? Organize and give workshops on ecology, health, agriculture, education, sports, human rights, carpentry, nursing, medicine, art, cooking, politics or social organizations.

5. Patronato Estancia Fraternidad
What is? A home shelter for family relatives of patients that are beeing treated at the General Hospital of Oaxaca. With a capacity of 150 people, the shelter helps an average of 110 people every day and gives them food and lodging.

What can I do? Cooking and serving of food. You can also, organize games, songs, dance, arts and crafts, etc for them.

6. Mundo Nuevo
What is? An non-profit NGO, that promotes environmental conservation. Mundo Nuevo promotes ways to treat all types of pollution. The income comes from selling the paper they recycle.

What can I do? Collect and separate products to be recycled; recycle paper goods, marketing of the final product (sale recycled paper) Explore other uses for aluminum, plastics, glass and organic goods.

7. Manos de Ayuda
What is?A non-profit, tax-exempt organization of Physical Therapists, Health Care Professionals, and other compassionate volunteers based in Tucson Arizona, dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance to disabled children in Northern Sonora, Mexico. More info: http://www.manosdeayuda.org/

What do they need? Speech, Occupational and Physical Therapy clinicians, support staff, nurses, physicians, and helping hands, to assist at our monthly free clinics. The ability to speak Spanish is helpful, but not necessary. We have many wonderful translators, simple cheat sheets for intakes, etc. Credentials or licenses are not required. Basic identification with a photo is needed for the border crossing.
